Creating a positive work environment is more than just hiring co-workers that do a good job and get along with each other. Creating a positive work environment is about starting with the core function in which your employees engage in their work and continually developing an outward focus. It is a strategic plan that builds upon individual success to create shared success.

  1. .. One of the most common frustrations among any employee is engaging in a task which appears to be unimportant, outdated or irrelevant. If you find your team members frequently questioning the process or purpose of a function it is time to stop, listen, and respond. Is there a better way to accomplish the task? Is it time to invest in updated resources? Is the task itself outdated? Challenge your team members to bring solutions and viable alternatives to the table. Empowered employees know that they have a direct influence over their work and its process. By opening a path of two-way communication, you encourage employees to constantly focus on efficiency and effectiveness.
  2. .. While you may not want to spend every waking moment of your free time outside of work with your co-workers, you shouldn’t count down every minute waiting to leave work and escape from them either. Whether management is willing to admit it or not, they can be influential in building a cohesive team atmosphere. Building report between co-workers is about uncovering common areas of interest and highlighting success. Rather than encouraging internal competition, managers should create a sense of shared ambition and goals. Employees benefit when they begin to see their co-workers as essential participants in achieving success not as obstacles to be overcome.
  3. .. The Millennial generation is often noted for their dedication to establishing a link between their work place and the community. Countless employers offer opportunities for team members to engage in activities that either benefit charitable organizations or participate in functions that enhance community growth. Many companies may find that rotating beneficiaries can create team building experiences. By allowing employees to freely engage in the outreach activity that fits their abilities and priorities, team members draw both personal satisfaction and pride in their employer.
  4. Shared Success… We all know organizations which call to mind excellence. Chances are strong these organizations all have three elements in common. They don’t cut corners, they value their employees, and they put customer satisfaction as a top priority. They have built a reputation for going above and beyond not at the expense of their employees, but as a result of their employees. Such organizations create a sense of shared success through self-esteem based upon pride in workmanship. These are the businesses who understand that investing in employee growth and talent pays dividends in the form of higher talent attraction.

When organizations include positive work engagement development as part of their short, mid, and long term goal strategies, it is because they recognize the value of their employees. Although automation and streamlining may boost the bottom line of any company’s profitability, long term sustainability will always be tied to successful employee engagement that is the result of a positive work environment.
